ISLAND ARTIST UNVEILS 'EXCITING AND ECLECTIC' NEW EXHIBITION AT QUARR ABBEY
Quarr Abbey Art Gallery is hosting a substantial exhibition of distinctive and unique sculptural ceramics, together with oil-painted mixed media wall art, by popular Isle of Wight artist Andrew Dowden.
Formerly a carpenter, Andrew was inspired to take up ceramics after watching a piece being thrown on a wheel whilst researching a book on Isle of Wight pottery (‘A Century of Ceramics’) and it has become an absorbing pastime.
Andrew is mainly self-taught and his primary interest is form and surface texture, many of his pieces being slab-built and hand-carved.
Inspiration comes from many sources including: tracks on the landscape made by man, machine and nature; history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and machinery – all adding further interest to designs.
Oil-painted, mixed media textured wall art gives an extra dimension to this exciting and eclectic exhibition which will appeal to a wide audience.
Quarr Abbey is situated in tranquil landscaped grounds, with a large free car park, teashop, farm shop, bookshop and visitor centre. There is disabled access and WCs. There is a woodland walk and the old abbey ruins are a short stroll away.
Andrew will be in attendance throughout the show and will be happy to chat to visitors about his work. A percentage of all sales goes to Quarr Abbey, a registered charity.
The exhibition will run from Thursday 31st August to Tuesday 5th September between 10:00 and 16:30 and entry is free.
